The HEC 1 computer, built in 1951 by the British Tabulating Machine Company (BTM), was a copy
of a computer called APE(R)C designed by Andrew Booth of Birkbeck College. HEC stood for ‘Hollerith Electronic Computer’. The photo shows the original HEC 1 as preserved at the Birmingham Museum
