The first Ferranti Mark I computer, showing the logic cabinets arranged along each side of a central aisle. This machine was delivered to the University of Manchester on 12th February 1951. Ferranti based the design on an earlier University prototype computer that first ran a simple program on 21st June 1948. The 1948 computer, known as the Small Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM), was upgraded during 1949 by which time it was known as the Manchester University Mark I .
