Three types of early storage device. At the upper left of the photo is a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), as used in the Williams-Kilburn electrostatic storage system. In the centre is a mercury delay line from a DEUCE computer, in the form of two metal tubes filled with mercury. Acoustic signals are transmitted down one tube and reflected back along the other tube. At the right is a package from a Ferranti Pegasus computer containing a nickel delay line register .
